Wonder Women, Final 32

Wonder Women, Final 32

Happy Friday! May your love of these women carry you into a beautiful July weekend, and may you not hate me for making you choose between Emily Blunt and Rachel McAdams. It's not my fault! I'm not making you... y'all are doing this to yourselves.

In this round, in addition to the ever-present photo, I'm sharing my personal favorite role played by each Wonder Woman. I have a lot of feelings; I hope you share some, too.

#1 Sandra Bullock v. #8 Julia Louis Dreyfus

Sandra's Wonder Women Wins: Jessica Alba and Jenna Fischer
My favorite Sandra role:
Preemptively? The new Oceans 8. Actual favorite? Lucy in While You Were Sleeping. The hair, the shrugs, the sweaters, the Bill Pullman eyes... it's perfect.

Julia's Wonder Women Wins: Lauren Cohan and Meg Ryan
My favorite Julia role:
Selina Meyer in Veep. Possibly one of the greatest characters of all time. And when you spent a decade playing Elaine, that's saying something.

#4 Emma Watson v. #21 Allison Janney

Emma's Wonder Women Wins: Margot Robbie and Robin Wright
My favorite Emma role:
Does "Red Carpet Poser" count? If not, I'm sticking with Hermione. Duh. And let's be real, y'all, she's not a terrific actor, but she is Hermione. It's hard to choose another.

Allison's Wonder Women Wins: Tarji P. Henson and Connie Britton
My favorite Allison role:
I haven't seen The West Wing yet, so my pick can't be C.J. Cregg even though it probably should be. That said, it's a tossup between the stepmom in Juno and Lily in Away We Go. She's so good at being irreverent.

#3 Emily Blunt v. #6 Rachel McAdams

Emily's Wonder Women Wins: Anna Kendrick and Sally Field
My favorite Emily role:
This is my game, so I get to decide that I have two favorites, not including her role as Regular Awesome Person Who Happens To Be Married To John Krasinski. One, Into the Woods which a lot of you think or have been told is lame, BUT YOU/THEY ARE WRONG. She's perfect as The Baker's Wife (a role I played in our high school musical by the way). And, two, Rita in the Tom Cruise thriller that flopped but shouldn't have Edge of Tomorrow. She is SO BOSS in that movie. Her arms? Stop it. Her attitude? Don't mess. Her tenderness underneath it all? Somebody throw me the remote so I can turn it to FX and watch the thing right now.

Rachel's Wonder Women Wins: Gal Gadot and Viola Davis
My favorite Rachel role:
The fact that I'm not choosing Regina George in Mean Girls is a testament to how good this Wonder Woman is at choosing and embodying roles. My personal favorite which I have painstakingly chosen is Mary in About Time. It's a sleeper movie, y'all, that is spoiled by a description and just needs to be watched. It makes you feel every emotion, and Rachel does most of that. It's one of my favorite movies ever. Rachel in all the things.

(Can you tell by the amount of words in this pairing that it's going to be an impossible choice? I'm crying about it as much as y'all are.)

#2 Tina Fey v. #10 Helen Mirren

Tina's Wonder Women Wins: Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ginnifer Goodwin
My favorite Tina role:
No question. Liz Lemon on 30 Rock. Anyone who makes social awkwardness, being a boss, and night cheese a thing wins it all.

Helen's Wonder Women Wins: Alison Brie and Natalie Portman
My favorite Helen role:
I was going to say Calendar Girls until I remembered that she SLAYED in Gosford Park. That's a secret favorite movie of mine that I can watch repeatedly, mostly due to Helen's portrayal of Mrs. Wilson, the head housekeeper of a Downton-esque estate who's swept up in who killed the master of the house.

#1 Meryl Streep v. #8 Melissa McCarthy

Meryl's Wonder Women Wins: Kathryn Hahn and Judi Dench
My favorite Meryl role:
This is a joke, right? These are personal favorites, not her "best" roles... although just about everything she does is her best minus Ricky and the Flash. So in no particular order, I have uncontrolled emotional responses to her in August: Osage County (so mean!), It's Complicated (she's the lead in a rom-com as a borderline grandmother... praise), Julie & Julia (when your Julia Child depiction outshines my beloved Chris Messina, you should win every Oscar), The Devil Wears Prada (again, ridiculously mean), and The River Wild (one of my favorite thrillers in all the universe hashtag scary Kevin Bacon).

Melissa's Wonder Women Wins: Susan Sarandon and Katie Holmes
My favorite Melissa role:
She stole the show in Bridesmaids and she kills it as Sean Spicer on SNL, but I will always love Sookie from Gilmore Girls in the deepest parts of my soul.

#4 Lauren Graham v. #5 Zooey Deschanel

Lauren's Wonder Women Wins: Holly Hunter and Ellie Kemper
My favorite Lauren role:
She's been both Lorelai Gilmore and Sarah Braverman. I refuse to choose.

Zooey's Wonder Women Wins: Jessica Lange and Keira Knightley
My favorite Zooey role:
Jess in New Girl. There's no conversation to be had here.

#3 Jennifer Garner v. #6 Mindy Kaling

Jennifer's Wonder Women Wins: Felicity Jones and Lupita Nyong'o
My favorite Jennifer role:
If you don't say Sydney Bristow from Alias, it just means you haven't yet seen Alias. The answer is Sydney. Amen.

Mindy's Wonder Women Wins: Diane Lane and Diane Keaton
My favorite Mindy role:
She wrote, produced, and acts as the character she wanted to see on TV. Who am I to disagree with the self-centered but compassion Dr. Mindy Lahiri??? Plus she brought Chris Messina in red reading glasses into my life. I OWE YOU EVERYTHING, MINDY.

#2 Emma Stone v. #7 Julie Andrews

Emma's Wonder Women Wins: Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams
My favorite Emma role:
I'm trying not to sob. She's electric on screen no matter what she's doing. Some of you are tired of her, but I'm not sure I ever will be. That said, my favorite role is - slow pitch - Mia from La La Land.

Julie's Wonder Women Wins: Sarah Paulson and Kerry Washington
My favorite Julie role:
I had a VHS tape with The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins recorded back to back off of TV, and during a childhood summer, I watched the entire tape at least once a day. Julie Andrews as Maria and Mary is part of my lifeblood. I feel like I owe her a slice of my happiness.

#1 Reese Witherspoon v. #8 Amy Adams

Reese's Wonder Women Wins: Demi Moore and Zoe Saldana
My favorite Reese role:
When I heard she was cast as June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, I thought Hollywood had lost its mind. No, I had lost mine because she blew me away.

Amy's Wonder Women Wins: Rose Byrne and Carey Mulligan
My favorite Amy role:
She was SO GOOD in The Fighter, but my secret favorite role is Sunshine Cleaning where she and onscreen sister Emily Blunt start a company where they clean up crime scenes. It's a quirky little indie movie that's always been high on my list.

#12 Claire Danes v. #13 Keri Russell

Claire's Wonder Women Wins: Vanessa Williams and Tracee Ellis Ross
My favorite Claire role:
I haven't seen Homeland yet, so I'm not operating with a full deck. I have a soft spot for her in The Family Stone though.

Keri's Wonder Women Wins: Kate Hudson and Maura Tierney
My favorite Keri role:
I haven't seen any of the stuff I'm supposed to have seen her in (Felicity, The Americans), but I will ride or die for her turn as the southern pie-maker who's pregnant and in an unhappy marriage in Waitress

#3 Jennifer Aniston v. #6 Emma Thompson

Jennifer's Wonder Women Wins: Tiffani Amber Thiessen and America Ferrera (but barely)
My favorite Jennifer role:
Obviously we have to mention Rachel - she's basically synonymous with the role - but I personally loved her in a movie I actually hated, He's Just Not That Into You. In an ensemble cast full of predictable storylines and mediocre acting, I thought she brought humanity to her role as a woman in a longterm relationship with a man who doesn't believe in marriage. We'll ignore that that man was Ben Affleck.

Emma's Wonder Women Wins: Amy Schumer and Rashida Jones
My favorite Emma role:
I didn't realize how fiercely I love Emma until I looked at her filmography. Elinor in Sense and Sensibility, Margaret in Howards End, Miss Kenton in Remains of the Day, Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter movies, and the jilted wife in Love Actually. No matter what she does, it's perfect.

#2 Jennifer Lawrence v. #10 Maggie Smith

Jennifer's Wonder Women Wins: Liv Tyler and Maya Rudolph
My favorite Jennifer role:
Of course she was a good Katniss, but she was absolutely fantastic in the role that put her on the map - A Winter's Bone. She plays a high schooler who has to find her missing father in order to pay debts and keep her family home. It's her best role for sure. The problem with knowing and loving the real Jennifer is that all I can see is Jen play-acting in most roles. It's a bummer that I keep expecting her to laugh.

aggie's Wonder Women Wins: Ellen Page and Nicole Kidman
My favorite Maggie role:
The Dowager. Hands down, right? Which is RIDICULOUS because she plays Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies, Constance Trentham in Gosford Park, and Mother Superior in Sister Act, all roles that feel ingrained in my soul. She's a treasure.

#9 Cate Blanchett v. #16 Kristen Bell

Cate's Wonder Women Wins: Minnie Driver and Helena Bonham Carter
My favorite Cate role:
No one else could play Galadriel in Lord of the Rings better than Cate, but my personal favorite is in Babel. She's heartbreakingly perfect in that film. Also do you know what she has coming down the pike? She's in the new female-led Oceans 8 film with Sandra Bullock and Mindy Kaling and everyone else amazing (minus Anne Hathaway), she's in the film adaption of Where'd You Go Bernadette?, and she's playing Lucille Ball in an upcoming biopic written by AARON FREAKING SORKIN. Stop it. All y'all just stop it.

Kristen's Wonder Women Wins: Octavia Spencer and the major #1 seed upset of Julia Roberts!
My favorite Kristen role:
Veronica Mars forever and ever amen. And Logan. Please include Logan.

#4 Betty White v. #5 Ellen Degeneres

Betty's Wonder Women Wins: Tatiana Maslany and Kristen Wiig
My favorite Betty role: Rose in The Golden Girls. Nothing matches it, even the snarky Sue Ann in The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Ellen's Wonder Women Wins: Emilia Clarke and Julianne Moore
My favorite Ellen role:
Herself. Without question.

#3 Amy Poehler v. #6 Drew Barrymore

Amy's Wonder Women Wins: Rosamund Pike and Cobie Smulders
My favorite Amy role:
Leslie Knope! Leslie Knope! There's no other but Leslie Knope!

Drew's Wonder Women Wins: Kate Beckinsale and Salma Hayek
My favorite Drew role:
It shouldn't be any good, but 50 First Dates with Adam Sandler is so much heart, makes me laugh, and makes me stop when it's on TV.

#2 Kate Winslet v. #7 Mandy Moore

Kate's Wonder Women Wins: Mariska Hargitay and Anne Hathaway
My favorite Kate role:
Can life count? I adore her. But I'll choose Marianne in Sense and Sensibility. Or Iris in The Holiday. Or maybe the mom in Finding Neverland. It all counts!

Mandy's Wonder Women Wins: Queen Latifah and Julianna Margulies
My favorite Mandy role:
I watched the pilot of This Is Us, loved it, but didn't have the emotional fortitude to have my heart broken every week. But even if I did watch, I still think I'd choose her role as a self-righteous Jesus-y mean girl in Saved!

I'm already sad. This is horrible.
